4.5 Years Later, No NTSB

November 19th, 2007 · No Comments

In May of 2003, the boiler on a 50 year-old cruise ship registered to the Bahamas exploded. The hot water and steam resulted in the deaths of 8 crew members and 17 injured crew members. 5 more crew members later died. All 911 passengers were evacuated safely.
Four and a half years later, there is no report coming from the NTSB.  The last public mention of the accident involving the Norway was in October of 2005 when the NTSB made a report to Congress. Apparently, the investigation was “on-going” at the time and various things were being inspected such as the adequacy of safety measures, maintenance, repair, and inspection of the boilers.

In May or June of 2005, Congress issued a directive to the NTSB telling them to hurry up the completion time for accident reports. The new leader of the NTSB, who arrived in August 2005, told the agency that he wanted the accident investigation process complete within 6 months of an actual accident. This has not happened.

The Norway accident was ruled one of the 5 worst accidents of 2003 and still there is no report on why the boiler randomly exploded when the boat was in port.
