For the second time in as many months, a cruise ship operating around Antarctica has struck ice and sustained damage. The good news for the MS Fram, a Norwegian ship, is that it did not sink.
Late on December 29th, the ship lost power for between 40 and 50 minutes. During that time, the ship drifted into a wall of glacial ice. When the ship regained power, it was capable of moving away from the ice with ease. It did, however, sustain some damages to a starboard lifeboat and some a little forward of that area.
Following the incident, the Fram was anchored at Chile’s Eduardo Frei Montalva station which is on King George Island. None of the ship’s 318 passengers were hurt.
