Increase in Pirate Attacks

January 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

The number of pirate attacks worldwide increased 10%, from 239 in 2006 to 269 in 2007, in a reversal of the downward trend seen since 2003. The increase is mainly blamed on a rise in attacks off Nigeria and Somalia, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

In 2007, 18 ships were hijacked and 292 crew members taken hostage. In addition, five were killed and three are still missing. Information also shows that pirates are becoming more violent and more likely to use guns - 64 crewmen were injured in 2007, compared to only 17 in 2006.

Indonesia is still the biggest piracy hotspot in the world, with 43 attacks last year.
