The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, one of the greatest environmental disasters in history, resulted in 240,000 barrels of oil being leaked into Prince William Sound, a $5 billion punitive damage judgment against Exxon, and 19 years of appeals by the oil giant. Now, the nearly two-decade long case is drawing toward a close, with the case scheduled to come before the US Supreme Court on Wednesday. At stake is the reduced $2.5 billion in punitive damages awarded so many years ago.
Exxon, which has since merged with Mobil to form the world’s largest private oil company, argues that it was not negligent in the incident.
