Increase in Pirate Attacks

The number of pirate attacks worldwide increased 10%, from 239 in 2006 to 269 in 2007, in a reversal of the downward trend seen since 2003. The increase is mainly blamed on a rise in attacks off Nigeria and Somalia, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

Officer to Blame for Accident

An officer on board a cruise ship has been blamed in a federal report for an accident that sent hundreds of passengers to the hospital. The ship was leaving Port Canaveral in July of 2006 when the accident occurred.

4.5 Years Later, No NTSB

In May of 2003, the boiler on a 50 year-old cruise ship registered to the Bahamas exploded. The hot water and steam resulted in the deaths of 8 crew members and 17 injured crew members. 5 more crew members later died. All 911 passengers were evacuated safely.

Boat’s Skipped Indicted For Fatality

The 23-year old skipper of a commercial fishing boat was indicted for 2nd-degree manslaughter, negligent homicide, two misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person and one of boating under the influence of methamphetamine following the January death of a crew member.
